42 Babies Delivered In Two Days At Dallas Hospital, Sets New Record

Baylor University Medical Center Dallas staff successfully survived a baby boom last week, delivering 42 babies in 48 hours and setting a new hospital record, according to a KXAS report.

“We’ve had a ton of people come in in active labor. Some come in for inductions and some come in at 10 centimeters ready to have a baby, and it’s just been crazy,”  chief-resident Shannon Miller said.

Delivery rooms filled up the morning of June 19, and again in the afternoon on June 20. By 4 p.m. Wednesday, resident Jenny Uremovich noticed nine patients were ready to deliver at the same time.

Those nine babies were delivered by doctors and nurses within 40 minutes, and by the end of the day, history was made at the hospital, which normally averages 12 births a day.

The record day also bucks the normal trend of September births, which is historically the most active birth month in the U.S.

Hospital staff had several theories for the increased number of births, including the impact of recent natural disasters. Hurricane Harvey and Maria hit the U.S. coastline about 9 months ago.

To commemorate the most babies she has seen delivered in her 24-year career, nurse manager of labor and delivery Kristine Debuty, RN, is calling this batch of babies the “Baylor 42.”
