St. Louis Hospital Expects Heavy Travel Nurse Needs For Flu Season

Barnes-Jewish Hospital-St Louis-Missouri

Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri is expecting to hire hundreds of travelers this fall in preparation for flu season, according to data gathered by HCT Today from industry sources.

A contingent staffing coordinator for the hospital told staffing agency sources that Barnes-Jewish expects to send out around 200 to 250 travel nurse job orders during their third quarter, which stretches from August through the first half of October.

This will be the largest number of job orders sent out by the hospital during this time in the past three years. Previously, Q3 2017 had the most total job orders at 163.

Medical-surgical, ICU and ER are expected to be the most in-demand specialties. Telemetry may also see high demand, as those travelers may need to help stem overflow on ER and medical-surgical floors.

To help recruit qualified candidates, bill rates for these positions will be higher than previous years across all specialties, a staffing agency source at LiquidAgents Healthcare told HCT Today.

“The hospital had trouble last year getting candidates, so they are increasing rates this year to help fill orders and stay competitive,” the LiquidAgents source said.

About Barnes-Jewish Hospital

Barnes-Jewish Hospital was ranked at the 11th best hospital in the nation and No. 1 hospital in Missouri by U.S. News & World Report.  The hospital has more than 1,300 staffed beds and is the largest facility in the BJC Healthcare system.

Travelers who land a high-paying Barnes-Jewish contract may also end up saving a lot of that money on rent because Missouri has one of the lowest cost-of-living ratings in the U.S. Specifically in St. Louis, housing costs are 28 percent lower than the national average, according to data from PayScale.
