For those who have their California license, The Golden State may be the best place to go this summer—at least if you can secure a contract within the next few weeks.

California is already one of the most in-demand travel nursing and allied healthcare destinations year-round thanks to sunny skies, abundance of outdoor activities and high-paying jobs, but facilities have posted weekly pay packages with even higher rates than usual this spring.

Among other states to watch out for are Louisiana, Kansas, Indiana and Virginia.

Virginia has garnerned interest from travelers in recent weeks because of high pay packages ahead of the summer heat, according to StaffDNA job board data.

Alaina Spurr, a client advisory coordinator for LiquidAgents Healthcare, said competition for jobs and bill rates have jumped in Virginia since the start of May.

“Right now, medical-surgical and telemetry specialties are in high demand. There has been a steady increase in ER needs and we believe it will continue to increase over the next few weeks,” Spurr said. “Out of the actively open job requisitions we have in Virginia, almost half (46 percent) are medical-surgical and telemetry specialties. This means our clients are facing competition for the same candidates in the specialties they need or want.”

Indiana, Kansas and Louisiana should be on your radar because we expect to see competition for travel nursing jobs in those states ramp up after they enact compact privledges on July 1. Data we’ve collected from previous months show that new eNLC states often see interest from nursing compact license holders in the months following enactment.

Last but not least, don’t forget the Southwest as we march towards June. Nevada, New Mexico and Arizona all have numerous premium job opportunities for core nursing and allied specialties, with weekly pay rates ranging from $1,600-$2,500 based on the specialty needed.
