Travel Nurse Market: Missouri Surges With New Jobs, Traveler Interest

If seeing the St. Louis, Missouri skyline is on your bucket list, now is a great time to apply—especially for travel nurses—according to recent job market data from StaffDNA and industry sources.

“Missouri is on fire for [medical-surgical/telemetry],” said Jennifer Pomietlo, a director of client advisory for LiquidAgents Healthcare. “I have over 45 different [medical-surgical/telemetry] options on my job board.”

Recent StaffDNA job board postings also show a healthy amount of labor and delivery, NICU, PICU, ICU and ER jobs in major metropolitan areas like Springfield, Kansas City and Columbia.

The state has also gained popularity as a surprise summer traveler destination of choice, breaking into the top 10 most applied-to states in June.

For travelers who have never visited or worked in Missouri, we’ve put together some of the benefits to working in the Show-Me State.

1. You can start working very quickly

Missouri is one of the 31 states that are part of the enhanced Nursing Licensure Compact, meaning nurses who have a compact license can work in the state without paying additional licensing fees.

Travelers who don’t have a compact license can get a single state license at a low cost. The state board charges $55 for a license by endorsement or $45 by examination. Missouri is also a walk-through state, so nurses can get a temporary license within a day.

You can find more Missouri licensing information on the state nursing board website.

2. Rent (and cost-of-living) is dirt cheap

According to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, Missouri is one of the most affordable states in the country. The state has a regional price parity index rating of 89.5, meaning costs for things like rent, gas, food and other consumer goods are significantly cheaper than the national average.

Missouri also ranks at No. 30 on our Travel Nursing Pay Package and Cost Of Living By State list. While travel nurses won’t save as much compared best-value states like Iowa, they won’t have to worry about losing money from daily expenses.

3. There are tons of things to do for nature junkies, history buffs and live performance fans

Missouri has tons of beautiful and unique national and historic sites to explore, including the largest man-made underground caverns, the Lake of the Ozarks, more than 80 vineyards across the state, the National WWI Museum, and much more.

If you prefer to kick back and relax, Missouri is also home to Branson, which is one of the most popular tourist destinations for live theatre and music performances in the country.
