Travel nurse needs in Dayton, Ohio surged this week, with more than 100 positions available across several specialties spread between hospitals in the area, according to recent job market data.

Facilities are primarily looking for medical-surgical, ICU, telemetry and step down travel nurses, but positions for OR, CVICU and certified surgical techs are also available.

Potential candidates should have experience at a large hospital or a Level I Trauma facility, EPIC charting experience and must be willing to float to competent areas as needed. Most of the opening would have start dates in early November.

Ohio has joined a long list of states with hospitals posting triple-digit travel healthcare staffing needs in the past two months ahead of the flu and winter busy season.

Opportunities in Ohio have increased steadily in the past two months, but recruiters are just now seeing a large surge in the Dayton area, said Shelbie Summers, a senior recruiter team lead with Tailored Healthcare Staffing.

“This is typical as we approach for the holiday season, flu season, and with the amount of staff nurses that are wanting off around this time of the year…If you are looking to start travel nursing now is the time to do it,” Summers said in an email.

Ohio is not the only state in the upper northeast experiencing job growth. Indiana, Pennsylvania Michigan have posted hundreds of jobs in the past two weeks in an effort to fill gaps left by “snowbird” travel nurses heading south for the winter.

Ohio is single-state license only—but it does offer temporary licenses

Compact nursing license holders will still have to get a single-state Ohio license if they want to work there, but they can still obtain a temporary license within 5-7 business days, according to Ohio Board of Nursing website.

According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, Ohio’s price parity index rating is an 89.3 which ranks it as one of the most affordable states to live in the U.S.

Part of this low rating is because of the affordable renting costs. In Dayton, Ohio, rent and housing costs are 32 percent lower than the national average, according to data on Payscale.com

This can potentially be beneficial for travelers who prefer to take a housing stipend instead of agency-provided housing, as they bank some extra cash from savings because of low rent requirements.
